Liaison

Rehan S. Khan is an Islamic Finance professional, speaker, and instructor who helps Canadian organizations in Shariah-compliant product development and promotes the Islamic Finance industry through education and advocacy.

Khan is a CPA from Maine, USA, an MBA in Islamic Banking and Finance from the International Islamic University of Malaysia, a Bachelor’s in Technology from York University, Toronto, and an Associate’s Degree in Programming & IT from the Eastern Mediterranean University of Turkey. He speaks five languages and enjoys traveling, sports, and spending time with his family.

Before becoming active in the Islamic Finance industry, Khan worked as an Interest Relief Analyst at CIBC dealing with government-sponsored student loans. Later, he joined the principals of a start-up providing Shariah-compliant mortgages in Ontario, responsible for marketing and back-office operations, and was instrumental in its rapid growth to a $110 million asset-based company in less than two years.

In 2005, Khan went to Malaysia to pursue his MBA in Islamic Finance. While working on his Master’s degree, he worked as a research analyst and trainer for Kuwait Finance House (KFH), one of the largest Islamic banks in the world, where he developed KFH’s in-house training program and trained over 100 bankers in Islamic Finance.

For twenty years, Mr. Khan has been regularly conducting seminars and certification courses on Islamic Finance, specifically in home financing and debt & equity-based instruments. He has been a frequent speaker at York University, the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and Toronto Metropolitan University, and specializes in re-engineering conventional financial products into Shariah-compliant equivalents. He was also an instructor at Centennial College, teaching the CISI Islamic Finance & Investment course for many years.

Currently, he is a liaison at the Islamic Finance Advisory Board, responsible for product restructuring, training, and advocacy. He also advises credit unions in Ontario on Shariah-compliant financial instruments and has authored various white papers on Mortgage Investment Corporations (MIC), retail and commercial mortgages, auto leasing and financing, commercial equipment leasing, and Trust & Equity Fund models.
